After the long but successful Hog deer hunt in April, I needed a break for a little while but as the days turned into weeks I started to get the bug again, time to get into the high country and chase the truly tough stuff, south Pacific’s toughest game animal the Samba deer. Matt and I regularly went up to hunt Sambar and a trip was soon arranged with a friend john, matt, Elyas and me. May is a good time to hunt Sambar, too cool for snakes but not too cold to have to get rugged up, or so I thought.

After once again packing everything that is required as well as what maybe required in any situation we set off for a hunt in Victoria’s alpine high country. We arrived up there very late at night and found matt and john had hit the hay early after hunting that day. So I quickly dumped all the gear out of the car set up the swag and hit the hay as well. In the morning a quick stoke of the fire, a hot brew and then the longest part of all; deciding where we were all going to hunt. After dressing myself up in full camouflage and then ragging Elyas up in some warm clothes, we set out on a brisk walk to the hunting area.

We soon separated, 1km off set matt and 1km the other way went john. I decided to stay in the middle; it looked flatter and safer in case of emergency. We agreed on a call in on the UHF’s at 12pm and then every hour on the hour from then on, if a shot was made turn the UHF on and wait for the shooter to call in. Even at such a young age Elyas was fascinated by everything, from showing him deer poo, he too wanted to smell it, to small purple flowers which started a great tradition of bringing home his mother some of the local flora (stick and leaves) or geology (river rocks). The backpack seemed to have gained a little weight (kids grow so fast) since the hog deer hunt either that or the country was much steep, probably a combination of both!

After an hour fresh sign was found, tracks and pellets nice and slimy green. I followed the tracks until it was 12pm, time to make the first call in. Turning the UHF on I waited and within seconds both matt and john checked in and gave approx positions on the map, then a flash of brown and orange caught my eye…….deer. I stopped talking and watched a large stag on a fast trot get 80m away and stop. I tried to get a bead on the stag with the 300wsm but when he did stop to glance back he covered his vitals with a large snow gum. He had in my mind massive antlers, one was covered by another tree but when he continued on I saw both of them, long and curved. Picking the UHF up I told the other what had just happened.

The stag had probably been wandering to find a secure spot to bed, and was disturbed by john, deciding that he go over the hill he had cut across my track and come from behind then been startled by my scent, and moved quickly to my left behind me, if only I had been slower. I don’t know how much slower I could have gone but I was disappointed that the animal had escaped especially having come from behind, I did consider myself lucky though to see a Sambar within 1 ½ hours of hunting.

That was the only excitement Elyas and I had until the 3pm call in. Resting the pack with El in on a large rock I loosened the straps giving myself the ability to glass the valley in front. We all checked in on the UHF’s and then I saw another orange flash……..could it be. Yes another Sambar, making sure the wind was in my favor I tightened all the straps, double checked that nothing could come loose and placed a round in the camber. All I had to do was cover 50m to give myself a clear shot from a large eucalyptus tree, otherwise I would be taking the risk of the bullet deflecting off the tea tree and scattered ferns.

With no word of a lie it took me 50 minutes to cover that 50m, the Sambar now identified as a hind regularly checked the vicinity. I did everything right, showing El the deer he seemed excited too. I placed one foot at a time in between lying twigs and leaves, shuffling my feet so as not to make any crunching sounds. My shoulders aching from the pack I wanted to hurry up and get to the tree, but knowing Sambar any sudden movement and she would have bolted without hesitation. Words simply cannot describe time but eventually I made it to the gum tree. I resting my arm on the tree I placed my rifle on top in a shooting position, signaling El to block his ears and to stay steady I readied for the shot.

I placed the crosshairs on the deer standing 80m away I looked at taking a chest shot, and then realized that I had the opportunity to take a high shoulder and cleanly dispatch a deer with the minimum of fuss. When the hind next looked up I imagined the spine and shot high on the shoulder. The roar of the 300wsm echoed through the valleys, and well before the echoes had stopped the hind had dropped, the failsafe had sheared through the top of both the shoulders but most importantly shattered the spine. I was rapt, turning my UHF on I called the guys, they had heard the shot. I told them what had happened, and they jokingly replied “you’ll be right you can carry it out on your own”. I gave them my GPS co’ ordinates and celebrated with Elyas. I propped the camera on a near log and snapped away with a few photos, it was at this time I noticed he was decidedly quiet. I took him out of the pack and sat him next to the deer so he could soak it all in. he patted the deer showed me her ears and eyes. I took some photos to capture the moment we had just accomplished a great feat, we had taken a Sambar together; we had managed to hunt in fair chase a wild Sambar together he at the tender age of only 2 1/2, I then started the hard work of butchering.

Then El started to cry, unsure as to why I checked him over. No dirty nappy his hands seemed fine, it wasn’t until I checked his feet I notice they were frozen! I made an emergency fire and took his leather boots off, warming his feet near the fire. I had been walking and had not noticed the drop in temperature as I had been moving and focused on the deer. I notified the boys and continued both butchering and keeping my son near the fire. By the time the boys had arrived I had the deer in pieces but still crying child. Quickly packing El back in the pack we all took a piece of deer and head off to camp it was about a kilometer away. John was quickly out of sight, Matt however stuck by and helped steady me through the creek crossings and uneven marsh grasses.

With El still crying I was starting to panic, we stepped up the pace as fast as my aching body could go; I dropped my front half of the deer in a fork of a tree and started to run back to camp. When I arrived at camp John had the fire going and I quickly warmed El up by it, also giving him some medication for a lump on the head he had received whilst I was running back to camp. It wasn’t long before El warmed up and actually volunteered to go to bed! Whilst relaxing after he had gone to sleep I revealed in my achievement, I thought I may have a slight chance to do a grand slam of all six deer species with El, but it was probably a dream?

Liverpool B&B’s and guest houses are just the places to stay if you are visiting Liverpool to check out the legendary Beatles or, for that matter, Gerry and the Pacemakers or Billy Fury.

But there’s more to Liverpool than the memory of the culture or imagery of that time when Liverpool was known around the world for the sounds of the sixties!

There are, for example, some of the best galleries and museums of any major city anywhere in the world outside of capital cities.

There are plenty of listed buildings to see, more in fact, than anywhere outside London and the architecture is certainly world-class.

There are loads of things to do in Liverpool and the choice is quite staggering, with sport, arts, culture, theatres, shopping and the waterfront to enjoy.

The shopping experience deserves a trip in it’s own right so if you are up for a bit of retail therapy, Liverpool has it in abundance. Plenty of stores and fashionable boutiques to tempt you so prepare your credit or debit card for some strenuous shopping trips!

Your days out should include visits to the Mersey Coast and countryside to admire some of the beautiful parks and gardens where you can see, amongst many other things, the endangered Red Squirrel. The largest herd of African elephants in the UK is at Knowsley Safari Park. If time permits, you could plan a short stay or weekend break at a bed and breakfast or guest house in this area to do it justice.

Liverpool is not just about music and football! The area actually includes green fields and woodlands, too, so if you want to combine the excitement of a modern city with the delights of the countryside, the Liverpool region is the place for you.

It’s impossible to talk about this part of Britain without mentioning football because two of the best known teams in the world have their grounds just a few minutes from the centre of Liverpool.

The first official Grand National was run in 1839 and today it’s held at Aintree (long before the Beatles were even a twinkle!) and known as the toughest horse race in the world. Liverpool bed and breakfasts can be found within a mile or two of the race course at Aintree. Racing is also held at Haydock Park where flat and jumping fixtures are scheduled throughout the year.

When it comes to eating out in Liverpool, you will again be spoiled for choice! The diversity of the type of food available is quite amazing with a diversity of food that does the city proud. If you want traditional British food or afternoon tea you will not be disappointed but food from other countries is also available with cooking from the Caribbean, China, India, Italy and France to delight your pallet.

If, at the end of your stay, you still have not found anything to do with the Beatles, or if you have not actually walked over Penny Lane zebra crossing, perhaps you should return to Liverpool before long and experience some of the pop culture the city is still best known for!!

Today, the dark rainy clouds continue to hang around Nanyuki town making me wonder why I promised Evans our lead guide on Mt Kenya to include me on his Porters team that will accompany him and a group of Five Trekkers for a 5 day Mt Kenya trek via the Sirimon – Chogoria route.

It’s apparent to me now that the mountain isn’t going to be short of rain any time soon.

But before I ponder this thought further, Evans calls me to inform me that they’re now crossing the Equator which is just a few minutes drive to where we are waiting for them.

On their arrival, I am already in the company of the team’s cook and the other porters all of who reside in this base climbing town of Nanyuki.

As we gather outside the parking lot of the Marina Restaurant, where they normally have their lunch, a safari van honks behind us and on turning, it’s Evans and the climbers.

They disembark from the vehicle and introductions are quickly made. For now all I can hear around the parking lot are the words “Pleased to meet you, pleased to meet you”.

I can clearly see excitement written all over their faces.

Evans leads them to the restaurant to brief them and organize for their lunch. He soon emerges and we all share our duties as who is to get what. Shortly, we all scatter in different directions and to regroup at this very point after an hour.

I head out to the market to get all the fresh farm produce. I have the list at heart and I sing it out as I do my rounds in the market. Eventually my basket is packed to the brim with our requirements for the 5 days.

Time is now slipping away fast and my hunger pains are at it again. I know it’s going to be a tough afternoon so I have to eat all I can lay my mouth on. On my feet, and with all my shopping strapped to my back, my quick tough jaw does it again for me! Luckily I make it back to the parking lot on time.

The parking lot is in a bit of a pandemonium now as everyone is busy consolidating their stuff and check listing everything. Eventually everything is packed into the vehicle for the last drive to the sirimon park gate.

It’s already heading past One thirty and Evans dashes to check whether they are done with lunch. He emerges shortly with them and shows them to the vehicle. They climb enthusiastically knowing that very soon they will begin their dream trek on Mount Kenya.

As we speed towards the mountain, their anticipation is unmistakable! And within 45 minutes we are right in front of the Sirimon park gate.

We all climb down the vehicle and unload everything with speed.

As Evans clears with the park gate, we are busy sharing out the luggage, an exercise that I must admit is done with its share of complaints.

Eventually, I end up with a 35 Lbs luggage even after having played all my tricks! …..this job is not for the faint hearted!

Before long Evans and the climbers disappear into the forest with their day packs strapped to their backs. No worries as we will definitely catch up and overtake them soon.

I mount up my back pack and blast off the gate with the other porters hot on heels towards the forest. As a matter of fact, there is little comfort in knowing that we won’t be anywhere near home until after 3 grueling hours.

For us the catch is to hit camp long enough before the climbers, a task we’ve religiously accomplished over the years.

We push our way up the forest blasting past the bamboo and passing our guide and the trekkers on the way.

As we hit the higher elevations, conversation amongst us dies out as tackling the steep gradients is energy sapping. Every iota of energy here counts.

Unrelenting in our push, we tackle every successive hill sweating like pigs till we approach the home stretch. As we emerge from the sharp climb and negotiate a corner, it’s a big sigh of relief as we sight the roof of the Old Moses Camp. This rekindles conversation between us as our new found energy pushes us up the last hill to the camp getting there on time.

We quickly change our sweat drenched garments and gather in the kitchen to prepare hot water for the climbers to make drinks once they arrive. We then settle for a cup of black tea before plans for dinner gets underway.

We are really grateful to the mountain Gods as we didn’t taste the rains today……the mountain can be very unforgiving sometimes.

From the camp, we check out the trail below from time to time to see whether Evans and the climbers are approaching. As they eventually approach, we set the drinks on the dinning table awaiting them.

We immediately start preparing dinner as it’s our practice to serve it at 6.30 P.M. After serving dinner we prepare our own food and go to bed early knowing that today was just but a child’s play compared to what we face tomorrow.

See you tomorrow when we embark on our 2nd day

There are many sources on the net where you can find information on cheap airfare, hotel deals, car rental discounts, weekend getaways and other travel bargains. Finding the right airline ticket to fit your needs and budget is never easy. Some sites will help you get everything sorted and even offer you lists of sites that offer travel tips. Free tips might not always seem relevant but seasoned travelers will agree that such information can help you prepare for travelling abroad, including health, insurance and passport advice. This information will save you money, time and ensure you are safe from any avoidable harm.

If you are planning a holiday to Europe remember to check travel documents and information such as travel restrictions, visa requirements and renewals. If you are a non EU citizen you might benefit from getting a Schengen Visa; a visa that is valid for free travel in 15 countries namely; Austria, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France ,Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and The Netherlands

For more information visit the Schengen Visa web site. Some countries in other parts of the world like Kenya, a popular safari holiday destination, provide visa services on arrival. In most African countries they stamp your passport on arrival but it can delay your departure from the airport. You can take this option if you make a sudden change of plan, like if you change your holiday destination due to fundamental changes of circumstance.

Other useful information is not limited to train times; consider types of tickets, location of Bed and Breakfasts, hostels, discount holiday packages, and booking European flights and accommodation online early. If you have more time, you might be interested in up-to-date information on attractions, hotels, restaurants, nightlife, travel tips and more. Other sites such airport hotels offer price guarantee on reasonably priced airport hotels. Airport hotels are great if you want to rest close to the airport the night before you travel. The promise that if you find another service provider offering the same product cheaper, they match the price or refund you the difference is great. That is an iron-cast price guarantee that you could take advantage of.

A health tip for the modern traveller: hazards are everywhere! Staying healthy while travelling can help to ensure your trip overseas is a happy and enjoyable one. A sensible traveller will always try to find information and health tips long before the traveling date. The cost of travel health items can substantially add to the cost of a bargain holiday. Many travellers are unsure as to what is really needed. If you are not sure what vaccinations you need, practice nurses should be able to explain to you what vaccinations and other items you require for safe and healthy travel. Once you have made up your mind to travel and you are about to make the booking, it is prudent to see your GP or practice nurse, in plenty of time before you go, to discuss any vaccinations you might need.

For British travelers, the common vaccinations are; typhoid, hepatitis A, (Hapatitis B might not be free),meningitis C, tetanus, diphtheria and polio (which are combined in one vaccine). Anti-malaria medication is not usually free. More information is available from the Travel Health section of the NHS web site.

You can compare prices by reading user reviews, expert product reviews and online shopping guides. The internet is the best starting point simply because it is an faster, easier way to find hotels, airline tickets, vacation packages, travel deals, car rentals and cruises.

In this era of the internet, it is important that you search a range of prices, to make sure you get the best deal possible before you pay. A good example is airport parking Here you can use a range of easy price comparison tools to help you find a travel bargain. As a traveler you need to search and compare flights, hotel prices, holiday car hire and package holiday late deals. Everything you need for that perfect trip.

Finally, be a traveller who respects other cultures and the environment.

The Nguni Zambezi Voyager allows guests to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the Zambezi wilderness and to take part in a number of activities from visiting Victoria Falls to tiger fishing, visiting local villages, wildlife viewing or birding in Chobe National Park or perhaps just relaxing in the Jacuzzi!

If you are looking for something just a little bit different, why not consider a few relaxing days on a floating luxury lodge? The new Nguni Zambezi Voyager offers the perfect base from which to explore this diverse region with game viewing, birding, fishing, cultural visits and relaxation the order of the day.

The upper Zambezi wilderness is a mosaic of wetlands creating enormous biodiversity. Three predominant rivers flow through this area; the Zambezi, Chobe and Kasai. The opportunity to travel for hundreds of kilometres on all these rivers is possible with the Zambezi Voyager. Each river is unique and has its own character and charm, so a stay of a few days is recommended to enable visitors to enjoy as much variety as possible!

Nearby attractions include the magnificent Chobe National Park, a wildlife rich environment that is particularly well known for its large elephant population. Impalila Island is also located near by, this is the only place in the world where four countries meet at one point. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is just a day trip away, and this whole area will soon be encompassed into the exciting Kavango Zambezi (KaZa) Transfrontier Conservation Area.

Nguni is a luxuriously appointed, fully serviced and activity driven floating lodge, more than just a houseboat and more than a luxury lodge! Nguni accommodates ten passengers in either twin or double bedded accommodation. The well appointed berths are tastefully decorated with soft stone textures and hand made linen.

The entertainment decks combine a comfortable compliment of private lounges overlooking the idyllic waterways whilst the open air decks offer a choice of cooling off in the Jacuzzi or soaking up the African sun on the top deck loungers. Nguni is an exclusive experience affording you privacy amongst the scenic beauty of the African water and savannah.

One tender boat and guide per room are usually available, so guests can have a choice of either taking a safari on the Chobe River, concentrating on the photographic opportunities of an environment considered the Jewel of Namibia, enjoying a relaxing fishing trip, or simply travelling through this lush wilderness in distinctive comfort and style.

The Chobe has the largest concentration of elephants in Africa and for this reason alone the Chobe is a must for any visitor to Nguni. There are vast buffalo herds and numerous plains game species that traverse the area as well as the possibility of sighting predators such as Lion, Wild Dog, Hyena and Leopard. Approximately 450 species of birds occur throughout this area, indeed it is the most prolific birding wildlife area in Southern Africa due to a diverse variety of habitats.

The rivers have an enormous fish resource and therefore are home to magnificent water birds. Some of the iconic species of the area such as the African Fish Eagle, Mallachite Kingfisher, African Jacana and African Skimmer can be viewed easily from Nguni. The guides do however specialise in trying and finding the rarities like the Slaty Egret, Rosy-throated Longclaw, Coppery Sunbird, White Backed Night Heron and Pels Fishing Owl.

The river communities that live along the banks of the river are known as the Lozi and Masubia. Visitors are able to experience their lifestyle by simply observing as they tend to their daily duties or be more participatory as guests in one of their villages. The opportunity to take guided walks is available over varying distances and within different habitats. The walking is comfortable as the terrain is reasonably flat and is not exclusively for the energetic.

The Upper Zambezi and Kasai Channel has some of the best river fishing in the world. The targeted species are Tigerfish, Bream and Catfish. Tigerfish is the meanest African freshwater species and one of the most explosive freshwater game fish in the world. It has a reputa tion of being one of the hardest fighting and most difficult fish to boat. These river fish can grow up to 10kg (22lbs) in this stretch of water. The guides actively practice catch and release and are committed to the long term sustainability of our fish resource.

Although I had my first boyfriend at about 14 or 15, I didn’t really learn about the opposite sex until my first love as a grown woman. I was naïve and young when I actually fell in love with one of my managers at work. I was in my late teens when I first met him. There weren’t many years in age difference between us but he had already graduated and had been living with his high school sweetheart for years when I met him. I was in my senior year at high school, so to me, he was the elusive “older man”.

After years of having this enormous crush on him it was rumoured throughout the work place that he had broken up with his long time girlfriend. My heart skipped a beat! By now I had graduated from high school too and was living with my own high school sweetheart. Here I had been secretly longing for this man for so many years and now I possibly had a chance with him? But no, I couldn’t, I had a boyfriend. I had already gotten used to not ever being able to “have him”. There was nothing I could do, or was there? All I knew was that after hearing about Ewan’s break up with his girlfriend. I started to feel things for him that I had never felt for another man before. I couldn’t understand how one man could totally take over my thoughts and I was actually taken aback by my feelings for him. It didn’t make sense, I always had the boys chasing after me but Ewan had never “chased” after me, or even expressed interest in me, so why was I so intrigued by him?

I identify the events that followed as the beginning of my own Man Safari:

I’ll never forget Ewan’s dark hair and big green eyes. He had this way about him. I thought he was so intelligent, older and wise. He exuded confidence. I giggled my way through work with him and shook my head at night for how foolish I had been that day at work.

Sure I remember falling in love when I was 16 and again at 18 but with Ewan at work? Oh, it was different. I had had a crush on him since high school when they brought in a new manager to the place where I worked part-time and he became my new boss. Instantly, I thought he was amazing. He was sooooooooo cute and sexy, I practically wet my panties just listening to him give the staff direction. I took every shift he gave me back then and now as an adult woman with a boyfriend, I was having erotic dreams about him! Ewan had never paid much attention to me. He had always had a girlfriend. So why was I so taken with him? All over again, now that he was single, my feelings for Ewan became intense and odd to me. I explored these “odd” feelings by trying to engage my own boyfriend in more romantic and erotic adventures but all I discovered from those experiments was how similar all of my past relationships had always been.

Even from a very young age, I had always had the “upper hand” in almost every single relationship. My mother had only ever been with my dad, an abusive, alcoholic man with monogamy issues, so I guess I had vowed to be different. Throughout high school, I did have boyfriends but I always managed to break things off before they broke things off with me. I protected myself, guarded myself and I guess I never truly let a guy get to know the real me. Heaven forbid should I ever let a guy see any vulnerability or weakness in me. So, I just admired Ewan from a distance and I did my best to remain consistent and as professional as possible.

Ewan however changed. He started flirting with all the girls at work; he would join up with staff for drinks and started to arrive late to work from a night out of partying. I heard through the grapevine that he had even been out with Sandra, one of the girls at work. Damn, I wished it had been me but how could I be thinking those things about a man when I was living with my boyfriend?!? But I knew Ewan in his younger years had been totally punk and I could see that coming out in him once again and it excited me. I loved his punky, wild streak. I had to keep it cool though; we were work colleagues, both now in management positions and had an image to maintain for our employees. But what girl doesn’t get weak at the knees for a “bad boy”?

The day came however when I couldn’t contain myself any longer. I completely forgot about my poor boyfriend at home, my professional image and threw everything out the proverbial window! One day Ewan arrived late for work with his gorgeous dark hair completely streaked blonde. He strutted into work in his sexy casual clothes and a Subway sandwich he had just grabbed on his way in to work. All the girls at work silently gazed at him and when I saw those wild sexy streaks in his hair as he walked passed and winked at me, my tongue just about fell to the floor. Oh my God, he looked so hot and wild, my body quivered and ached all over.

While he sat by himself in the staff room at the back, eating his sub sandwich and changing into his professional work clothes, I paced back and forth in the busy front of the building thinking…it’s now or never. It’s now or never, I said to myself. I had to tell him how I felt. What if he started a relationship with Sandra and I blew my chance. Chance? What chance? I had no chance. I had a boyfriend! And what would I say? Would he think I was stupid? Would he laugh at me? Would he think of me as that stupid, little, giggley high school girl he had met 5 years earlier? Oh man, the clock was ticking and he would be finished his sandwich soon. He would be out to work with the rest of us and we would have to be professional. I straightened out my blouse, I adjusted my skirt, and I put my hand on the doorknob. I was just going to go in there and say it. It? What was “it”? What would I say? I adjusted my hair. This was it. I put my hand on the doorknob and just flew the door open.

And there was Ewan, startled by the door just bursting open, his sub sandwich still half in his mouth, half in his hands; he just looked at me with his big green eyes. I blurted out,

“Um, I just had to tell you that since you broke up with your girlfriend, um, ah, lots of the women here have openly talked about how good looking you are and who wants to sleep with you and ummm take you to bed with them and um…. and…and….and”

Ewan was still just staring at me, gorgeous green eyes wide open with his sandwich still: half in his mouth and half in his hands when I finally blurted out,

“ and… I just wanted you to know, that, um, that I’m one of those women too! “

I zipped back out of that room as quickly as I could. I slammed the door shut behind me and ran. Phew! I had done it! I wasn’t sure what I had just done but I quickly ran back out to be with the rest of the staff as quickly as possible. Thank God, I had done it!

As soon as I joined the rest of the staff, I couldn’t believe what I had just done. I could seriously be charged with sexual harassment or get fired, plus, he’s probably in there laughing at me right now. What had I done?

Sometime in February there will be half term and many people will either be making for the slopes or looking for somewhere sunny to spend a few days or the week. Which of our great range of holiday ideas will appeal to you? To help we have broken the holiday ideas down into a three overall categories, you can start by going straight to the type of holiday idea or activity that appeals most to you.

February Winter Holiday Ideas and Activities February Sun Ideas (Short haul and Long haul) February Sun Active Holiday Ideas February City Break Ideas February Winter Holiday Ideas and Activities

It is by no means an exclusive list but here are some local and not so local February Holiday Ideas, perhaps for those that relish a bit of snow and ice.

Antarctica

Among most adventurous of holiday ideas Antarctica is an untamed territory of wild, natural beauty, as well as a land of superlatives: the world’s fifth largest continent, the coldest place on earth, the highest average altitude, and the lowest humidity. The continent is devoid of a permanent human population, although what it lacks in the human factor, it more than makes up for in mammals and marinelife, wildlife and scenery. On your Antarctic adventure holiday you can witness penguins sliding on ice, whales emerging from the sea and seals playing along the shoreline – all in their magical natural environment. A huge variety of wildlife inhabits this part of Antarctica including gentoo penguins, leopard seals, orca and the humpback whale. November is best for icebergs and penguins and you can see seal pups from December to February.

Sweden – Lapland: The Adventure company

Geographically, Sweden is the biggest Scandinavian country, yet has a population of barely nine million, leaving much of Sweden a haven of unspoilt natural beauty. Anyone on an adventure holiday in Sweden can explore masses of ancient, coniferous forests punctuated by crystal-clear lakes; discover more than 10,000km of trekking and bicycle paths; see bountiful historical sites, including burial mounds, churches and fortresses; or wander the preserved, unpopulated national parks of Swedish Lapland with the magnificent Northern Lights sparkling above.

Travel into Europe’s northern reaches and explore the winter landscapes of Lapland. This is an active trip with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the snow-covered forests and discover the culture of the Sami people. The Adventure company offer a five day family tours which includes husky safari, snowshoeing, ice hotel, skidoos and other snow based activities and The Northern Lights (although these depend on the weather conditions). There is also an adult only tour, which lasts 7 days.

February Sun Holiday Ideas

Here is a good range of different ideas for getting away to sunny climes during February, we have ordered it by short haul to long haul.

Egypt – Sharm El Sheik

Sharm El Sheik on the Red Sea is the door to a magical underwater world of technicolour fish and coral that draws divers from around the world, it is a very popular, and so far safe destination. It boast a full range of accommodation to suit all budgets from self catering to 5 star spa resorts. Temperatures will be around 22 degrees max daytimes on average in February and flying time from the UK is about 6 hours.

Gambia

The Gambia is mainland Africa’s smallest nation, it is scenically varied, with sandy beaches, lush tropical forests, swamps, marshes and large areas of wooded savannah. The River Gambia, one of Africa’s great waterways, dominates the country. The Gambia is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 540 different species. While the country’s parks, reserves and up-country villages are a major draw for ecotourists and those interested in African culture, for many visitors it is the country’s pleasant tropical climate and relaxing beach resorts which are the star attraction.

Southern Turkey

Sit at a harbour front restaurant eating fresh calamari and sun drenched tomato salad washed down with fresh orange juice. Hike through the pine forests breathing in the scents of pine and wild thyme and oregano. Just stretch out by the pool or one of the amazing beaches and soak up the sun, perhaps browsing a good book and sipping a beer. Southern Turkey and resorts like Dalamar and Marmaris make an excellent February holiday idea, with a balmy climate and lots to see and do, while being accessible to nearly any budget. Buy a package, or get cheap flights with the low cost airlines. Flying time is about 5 hours from the UK.

Bali

Beautiful Bali is blessed with some of the finest landscapes in the Indonesian archipelago. It also has a unique cultural heritage making it a fascinating holiday destination. Choose from the resorts of Nusa Dua and Sanur. Nusa Dua is a purpose-built resort dedicated exclusively to tourists, with clean white beaches and clear waters. More traditional Sanur has a good selection of family-run restaurants and bars and is great for watersports. Take advantage of the regular public transport from Sanur to Denpasar, the capital. Ubud is the place for culture in Bali and is famous for its handicrafts and paintings.

February Sun Holiday Activities

For those who want to escape the Winter but are looking for a bit more than lounging by the beach and the pool, have a look at some of our February active holiday ideas.

India

Stroll through bazaars, discover magical and majestic temples and palaces, learn about India’s colonial past and see its influences particularly the colonial architecture. Visit the Taj Mahal, the Holy River Ganges, the Taragarh Fort or take a rickshaw just for the fun of it.

India by rail Specialist travel agency SD Enterprises sells a one-month rail pass for anyone of any age who wants unlimited travel around India.

Tigers and The Ganges. In the tracks of Mowgli The Indian subcontinent is home to more than 500 species of mammal, but to big game fans the Royal Bengal tiger is the major attraction. This trip not only offers an authentic insight into the great cultural and religious lifestyles of India, but is also a combination of temples, palaces, architecture and of course wildlife. Venture into the heart of Kipling country and visit two of India’s most famous wildlife reserves in search of tigers, the most majestic of all animals.

Maharajas, Tigers and Taj Mahul:

Venture into India on this 12 day tour, and introduce your family to the rich history and traditions of this fascinating and colourful country. This tour takes us to the palaces of Maharajas, past and present, and from small villages to the bustling city of Delhi. We visit the Taj Mahal, the tigers of Ranthambore, a camel breeding farm and wander around the forts of Junagarh and Mehrangah. A mixture of local transport includes camels, bicycle rickshaws and jeeps. We look for tigers and sloth bears in Ranthambore National Park, and we explore the beautiful city of Jaipur, also called the ‘Pink City’ – with its City and Amber Palaces. Discover the abandoned and ruined ghost city and ancient capital of the Mughal Dynasty, Fatehpur Sikri, and visit Pushkar – home of the famous annual camel fair.

Vietnam

This 12 day tour starts with classic Hanoi to Saigon: Your adventure starts in the charming old city of Hanoi, exploring its characteristic markets and backstreets. You’ll travel to Halong Bay (as recently seen on Top Gear and The Best of Top Gear) for an exciting overnight boat trip amongst towering limestone cliffs and hundreds of spectacular islands – a true fairytale setting. Hué & Hoi An: Boarding the famous Reunification Express train, you’ll head south glimpsing scenes of rural life from the train window before arriving in Hué, the cultural capital. Here you’ll travel by boat along the Perfume River to the tombs of the ancient Nguyen dynasty. You’ll have three nights to savour the atmosphere of the old port of Hoi An (our favourite place in Vietnam) so there’s plenty of time to explore its colourful streets and riverside market, or simply relax on a nearby beach. Mekong Delta & Saigon: You’ll spend a night with a local family in the Mekong Delta and travel by boat along rural waterways. Finally, you’ll arrive in vibrant Saigon where you can explore its bustling streets and temples.

Responsible Travel: The Adventure Company supports the Binh Luc Orphanage near Hanoi with $5 per person travelling. They are also supporting the Thai Nguyen Children’s Centre with $5,000 raised from our customers to provide much needed bunk beds.

South Africa / Kwazulu Natal: Rhino watching & Zulu battlefields

Your adventure starts with stunning scenery and culture as you explore Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon and the preserved Victorian gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. Next up is the famous Kruger National Park where you’ll head out on game drives hoping to spot the big five of elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo – not to mention zebra, giraffe, antelope and numerous species of colourful birds.

After stretching your legs in the Swaziland hills, the wetlands of St Lucia offer a completely different habitat to explore. The game viewing in Hluhluwe with its high concentration of rhino is fantastic. Heading back inland you’ll visit the Zulu War battlefields of Islandwana and Rorke’s Drift before ending up in the Drakensberg Mountains. These dramatic peaks and sweeping amphitheatres of rock offer great walking possibilities and you’ll have two full days to make the most of it. Travel with The Adventure Company.

Sri Lanka

Boasting warm temperatures throughout February, of 27 degrees, Sri Lanka is a perfect destination to visit. The country has seven world heritage sites and is ultimately South Asia’s favourite tourist destination. Natural wonders of the country comprise Golden beaches, abundant forests and rich wildlife habitats. The “Pearl of the Orient” Sri Lanka reflects a strong wealth of both natural and cultural diversity which spans over 2,500 years. Mountains and hills are rich in flora and fauna with waterfalls cascading down the mountains surround the four major national parks. Sri Lanka never fails to captivate with its tropical beaches, diverse culture and ancient cities. Take a walk along a palm-fringed beach or jump in a canoe for something a little more active. Experience the romance, colour and spice of Sri Lanka, a truly remarkable destination that you’ll never forget!

Kumuka offers three tours to Sri Lanka and visits all seven of the Unesco World heritage sites: Sri Lanka uncovered (12 days); Elephants, Fire Walkers and Beaches (12 days);Action Sri Lanka (9 days) all with optional beach tour 4 day extension pack.

Brazil – Carnival

You are greeted with delight, dazzle, and decadence when arriving at the annual Brazilian Carnival. People from all around the world flock to the streets of Rio de Janiero to share in the celebration with locals known as Cariocas. Starting the Friday before Ash Wednesday, seven weeks before Easter Sunday, Rio de Janeiro hosts many festivities that occur throughout the city complete with music, parades, dancing, and renowned Carnival balls. Many activities take place during the carnival, including events that take place before the actual four day festival, including parades and rehearsals. The various gatherings combine to create days of enchantment, energy, and enjoyment, capturing the true sense of Rio’s Carnival. The Carnival is celebrated every year on a different weekend, the official date always being forty days before Lent.

Hotels accommodations in Kenya range from Nairobi Budget hotel to luxury world class hotels. Most of them have partnered with renowned tour operators within the country (head offices mostly in Nairobi) and even abroad. This forms efficient service delivery channels for the country’s many tourists to include pick up from the airport, car hire and car rental services. Some of the hotels around lake Naivasha include the following:

Loldia House – This is one of Kenya’s oldest farms, situated in the spectacular Great Rift Valley on the shores of Lake Naivasha and within easy reach of the capital, Nairobi. Lake Naivasha Country Club – opened in 1937 as a staging post for Imperial Airways’ flying boat service from Durban to London. The 55-acre property boasts green lawns shaded by mature acacias and spreading fever trees, that stretch down to the lake’s shore.

Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge – On the southern shores of Lake Naivasha is Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge. The lake is the only freshwater lake within Africa’s Great Rift Valley.

Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge – The newly built Lake Naivsha Simba Lodge is situated within walking distance from Lake Naivasha. The walk to the lake shore is about a kilometer along a dusty path. Midway is a gate and electric fence to control the movement of hippos into the lodge grounds. A very high platform on the jetty offers a spectacular view of the lake and Mt Longonot.

Chui Lodge – In the Great Rift Valley lies Kenya’s Best Kept Secret “Chui Lodge”. Whilst sipping cocktails by the warmth of a campfire and watching the sun setting behind the distant hills, June Zwager envisaged the concept of Chui Lodge.

Crater Lake Camp – Nestled on the shores of a jade green volcanic lake just one and a half hours from Nairobi, Crater Lake offers an evocative step back in time – to a bygone era of elegance and romance, in a wilderness untouched by the modern world.

Elsamere – Elsamere is the former home of the late Joy Adamson who, together with her husband George, became world famous for their pioneering conservation work and relationship with the Lioness Elsa, as told in her best-selling book and subsequent film: Born Free.

Kiangazi House – located in the 5,000-acre Oserian Game Corridor. With delightful lush gardens littered with colour, rolling lawns and a view to compliment the beautiful setting it’s ironic that “Kiangazi” is the Swahili word meaning “hot and dry season”.

Kongoni Game Valley Villa – Kongoni Game Valley is a private park on the shores of Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s Great Rift valley only 120 km. from Nairobi. As an exclusive Safari Club it offers excellent and personalized attention to only a small number of guests.

Lake Naivasha Lodge – Lake Naivasha, managed by the Friends of Lake Nakuru and Elementaita Conservation Project, was formerly an English colonial farmhouse.

Malewa River Lodge – Within this Conservancy is the small and exclusive 16 bed “eco-friendly” Malewa River Lodge, nestled in the shade of huge Acacia trees on the banks of the Malewa River.

When I was a little boy in the 60s and 70s, the Douglas DC-3, which, like they did in Britain we used to call the Dakota, was all the rage. I used to travel around the country in that aircraft with my mum and dad. It was an awesome experience. I used to love the way the tail dipped when the aircraft was on the ground and how it lifted as it taxied down the runway before take off. A remarkable airplane, and one I couldn’t forget even when the Fokker Friendship came to replace it on domestic routes. As it happens, the DC-3 never really went away. 73 years after the DC-3 first flew, it has remained in the skies in quite a few countries around the world… it is believed there are 400 DC-3 aircraft still in service. In this article, I will discuss retro travel and the opportunity that awaits you to rekindle vintage travel in a remarkable tourist haven and setting that is, Tanzania.

One of the most successful airplanes ever built, the DC-3 made its maiden flight on December 17, 1935. The Gooney Bird, as it was sometimes called, was one of the first airplanes built primarily out of metal, replacing the wood-framed-and-doped-fabric airplanes that had evolved out of the Wright Flyer and the many models of airplanes developed during World War I. In the 1930s and 1940s, this American fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft — generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II — is still taking to the skies to this day in many parts of the world. Like its land equivalent, the marvels of yesteryear engineering — the steam train — offers a lap of luxury to its passengers to this present day on packaged rail safaris like the Blue Train in South Africa, aviation too brings back the the beauty and luxury of vintage travel to the skies.

Air travel in the 50s was much more regulated than it is today. All fares were fixed by the International Air Traffic Association (IATA). It seems almost inconceivable today, but IATA dictated exactly what could be charged on any particular route. Airlines could compete on standards of service, but not price. Hence a desire to offer the passenger the very best prevailed. In the early fifties there was only one class of travel: first or better than first class. Such luxuries as cocktail bars, and even beds had been provided on transatlantic flights. Fares were expensive and passengers were either very wealthy or claiming the trip on expenses. By the end of the fifties, there were four classes of travel, deluxe (better than first), first class, tourist class and economy class. The Indigo Aviation Dakota plying the Zanzibar, Selous, Pemba and Mafia routes from Dar es salaam, Tanzania, judging from the luxurious cabin alone, takes you back to the early 50s when, literally, there was only one way to travel – first class.

When I saw an ad on the cover of a local magazine (Advertising Dar) back in May 2009, I was thrilled to see the DC-3 back in action. To me, she is the most beautiful bird that ever took to the skies. My plan is to get on that plane to travel to Mafia island, a fascinating island steeped in history, and what I consider to be the ideal destination to fly to to write a series of articles on, in retro style.
